An important detail missing from the ballot for the London Lib Dem GLA candidates

The Knowledge is dying but do the would-be Lib Dem GLA candidates understand this?

At the Lib Dem GLA hustings, most of the candidates failed to show an instinctive understanding of how technology is destroying the basic premise of Black Cab regulation. more

Liberal Democrat members in London are currently voting to select the party’s Mayor and list candidates for next May’s GLA elections.

The ballot information for the list selection includes the following explanation about how the count will be conducted, as part of the party’s moves to improve diversity:

The count for the List Candidates will be adapted to allow the ordering of the List according to the preferences expressed on the ballot papers, subject to the requirement that at least at least one of the top three, at least two of the top six and at least three of the top nine to be candidates based on the Race / Ethnicity protected characteristic in the Equality Act 2010.

However, what isn’t included is who in the list of candidates count as having a racial/ethnic protected characteristic. Here’s who:

  • Duwayne Brooks
  • Merlene Emerson
  • Brian Haley
  • Teena Lashmore
  • Pauline Pearce
  • Zack Polanski
  • Marisha Ray

Note that there are no rules for gender balance. This is because with the outgoing group being gender balance, the legal powers to allow gender quotas don’t apply.
