First sight of agenda for Lib Dem conference in York – UPDATED
Previously I talked about the excellent Anders Hanson and his English Party reports. Now it’s the turn of Geoff Payne and his excellent federal party reports, from which the following information is taken about the agenda for Liberal Democrat conference in York (for which there is a Facebook event here).
We will be debating motions on:
- Fracking
- Economic Policy
- A fairer deal for private renters
- Regulatory framework for cannabis [Update: See Nick Clegg’s recent article for more on this issue and here is the resulting policy]
- Privacy and security in a digital age
- Electing diverse Members of Parliament [See All-women shortlists to be debated at Lib Dem conference in York for the background]
- A couple of constitutional amendments
The rally is going to focus on Europe. There will be consultation sessions on the Governance Review being undertaken by the Federal Executive and on the Agenda 2020 exercise presently underway through the Federal Policy Committee. There will be speeches from Lorely Burt and Caroline Pidgeon as well as the usual Leader’s Speech and Question and Answer session.
This news is also particularly welcome:
We have decided to launch a scheme that allows non-member party supporters to attend conference. We have set up a new registration category to that end. We think that it will be used by partners or family members of party members who attend conferences currently or new potential members who have not joined yet and would like a taste of the party first. This is an interesting scheme that we are going to watch carefully as it presents some good recruitment opportunities.
I’m a big fan of ways to involve non-members – hence my championing of having a ‘registered supporters’ or ‘friends of the Liberal Democrats’ scheme as part of a wider core votes strategy for the Lib Dems. This is a very welcome step in that direction. (Update: more details of the conference supporters scheme are here.)
Geoff’s reports are also included in Liberal Democrat Newswire (thanks Geoff!).
