Nick Clegg on Syria: “If we stand idly by we set a very dangerous precedent”

Nick Clegg says, “We will not stand idly by when chemical weapons are used in complete breach of international law”. It’s a good point – respect for international law means not just following it yourself, it also means enforcing it when others break it.

  1. So with no evidence of who was behind the attacks, we’re not going to wait for the UN, take the US version on trust, back the Islamist/Al Qeada side and go to war yet again.
This time because “something must be done” to enforce international law.
We have just spent the last 10 years killing innocent children and families from unmanned drones in contravention of international law.
Cannot believe the Lib Dems are campaigning for another Middle East war on little / no evidence. Not in my name and shame on you.

  2. Dear Dave (I hope you don’t mind me calling you Dave),

I suspect Clegg is trying to stop pointless military strikes on Syria given his past record – personally I’d like him to actually say something concrete to confirm this rather than be woolly.

I think you’re preaching to the converted on the obvious point that we don’t know who did it…all we know is many innocent people were killed and injured with weapons that are likely banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention signed in 1993.
It’s interesting to note the countries that are NOT party to this convention – Angola, Myanmar, Egypt, Israel, North Korea, South Sudan and Syria.
We would be better supporting the Arab league of nations in managing the problem than getting stuck into another war that will neatly draw in yet another bunch of suicidal fanatics.
