Dear Nick: please be unpopular and controversial
Dear Nick,
Please be unpopular and controversial.
(No jokes about whether this is your expertise, please.)
I’d like you to be unpopular – by backing Britain giving a safe home to more refugees from Syria, even though the public is against letting in as few as a few hundred.
I’d also like you to be controversial – by backing Maajid Nawaz over the cartoon he tweeted, even though depicting Mohammed at all is very controversial with some Muslims.
You’d be unpopular.
You’d be controversial.
You’d also be liberal.
Yours etc.
Dear Mark,
This post annoyed me. What on earth is the point in trying to provoke people to show how liberal we are? Is pumping someone’s heart with anger a liberal thing to do? I support Maajid because of his bigger goal, not because I think we should use it as an example to show off how liberal we are.
Best wishes
Hi Mark, I just thought I would apologise for my tone on my previous post. I was annoyed about some things in my private life and then arguments around this topic kind of made me feel worse. For the sake of reasoned argument my point was that we should support Maajid, but also consider the feelings of others before we act.
