You can’t get clearer than this: John McDonnell says Labour wants Brexit
No wonder so many Labour supporters are switching to the Liberal Democrats for these European elections:
That interview, of course, fits with what others in Labour have been saying too, despite the damage that Brexit is doing to the NHS:
Your headline is wrong – it should be more like “It couldn’t more unclear than this.”
McDonnell says “yes” he wants Brexit followed immediately by “but not one which damages the economy and living standards.” Since it’s generally agreed that any Brexit would do such damage to a greater or lesser extent (Remain is the best deal!) he’s effectively saying he doesn’t want Brexit.
We can only stop Brexit with substantial support from Labour. Remainers should be working to resolve the contradiction in the party’s position in favour of Remain, not just dismissing Labour as irredeemably pro-Brexit.
