Layla Moran was elected as the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Oxford West and Abingdon at the 2017 general election, taking the seat off the Conservatives.

She had also contested the seat in 2015, after having previously stood in Battersea and for the London Assembly.

A former maths and physics teacher, she was the first Liberal Democrat from an ethnic minority background to be elected at a general election. (Her mother is Palestinian.)

She has been the party’s education spokesperson and was briefly arrested by the police in 2013, as she explained in a public statement in 2019.

She ran for party leader in 2020.
